To be totally honest I didn’t know pageant coaching was even a thing, when I first started competing in pageants. Finding a coach can feel overwhelming, for new contestants, if you don’t know what to look for. I'm going to simplify this process, right now, to help you find the best coach for your goals. I’m diving into questions and things to think about when searching for a pageant coach so you can find the best fit for you.
FINDING A COACH NEAR YOU
If you live in a major city across the U.S. or in a pageant state, there’s a good chance there is a coach in driving distance of you. This is the option that most contestants seek when first looking for a coach, but it is not always the best option. As I prepared for Miss USA I met with my coaches only once in person, through the Beauty Brand Believe expo, which brought pageant experts from around the country together for one weekend. All other meetings were conducted through Skype. Virtual meetings are becoming more common place because contestants who want to work with reputable coaches are now able to do so via the Internet. I personally conduct all coaching appointments through Skype or Facetime, which provides an added benefit to contestants; they save on gas money and travel time to appointments.
BUT HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Pricing varies greatly dependent on many factors. As a contestant you should weigh these questions against the cost of a coach. These will help you to determine if the coaches price equates to their value. For example: if a coach has worked with a national titleholder for your dream pageant system, but their coaching services cost more than a local coach in your area, opting for the coach who has that specific experience could be worth the extra coaching cost to achieve your goal.
- What is their coaching experience?
- How long have they been coaching?
- Have they coached contestants or titleholders in the system you are entering?
- Have they won a title within that system or competed in it?
- Can they provide you with a list of past clients and placements?
- Do they have experience judging or working for a pageant system?
- Do they offer any resources beyond the coaching appointment like handouts, video courses, guides?
- Do they offer coaching packages or bundles that will allow you to book more appointments at a lower price?
- Is this their part-time or full time job?
ARE THEY THE RIGHT FIT?
Finding the right coach is a process of trial and error. Some contestants use one coach to prepare for all areas of competition. I personally have clients like this; I take care of everything for them from paperwork, speeches, and routines to wardrobe, hair, and makeup styling. Other contestants prefer to use multiple coaches. This could mean meeting with several interview coaches, or choosing one interview coach, and one walking coach. I have client’s like this as well; we only work together on one area of competition. Everyone’s journey to a crown looks different so don’t feel like you need to follow in anyone’s exact footsteps. What worked for one contestant might not work for you. If you’re unsure if a coach is right for you and your goals, don’t be afraid to try another.
